Photography Workshops

A number of photography workshops are taking place which are suitable to all levels of photography experience; mobile phone camera and access friendly. More information can be found here .... Workshops

Around Andover - Route A

Saturday, August 16th & Friday, August 22nd.

Suitable for all levels - including total beginners.

This workshop looks at the composition and framing of the subject you are taking a photography of to add to the look and feel of your image.
You may have your camera settings set for a correctly exposed image but composition and framing are just as important as you take your shot.

During a gentle walk around Andover we shall be looking for the local landmarks and finding those places most people just miss. Total distance covered is 1/2 mile (0.8 km).

With the emphasis on composition and framing, you can have you camera/phone camera set to the auto mode. Plus advice will be given for those shooting in other modes.

* The two workshops 'Around Andover Route A & B' together cover just under 1 mile (1.6 km). Starting from different ends, workshop A and B may slightly over lap the same area walked at the end, just depending on the speed that the group walks - this is no speed march but a gentle pace to take in the local sights.

If you join both workshop A & B, you may see the same sights for the last part of your workshop but from a different direction - something you will be encouraged to look for during the workshop.

Common information for all workshops can be found at the bottom of this page.

Around Andover - Route B

Monday, August 18th & Sunday, August 24th.

Suitable for all levels - including total beginners.

Depth Of Field Control

Wednesday, August 20th.

Suitable for digital cameras and phone cameras that let you choose pre-set modes (ie Portrait, Landscape), or let you choose Aperture Priority/Aperture Value mode and select a value of aperture.

Controlling the aperture allows you to select what area is in focus, in the photograph you are taking. Like the hawk image here, the aperture has been set to allow the background to be blurred out, so the subject, the hawk stands out better.
The aperture could be adjusted so the background is in sharp focus, or an amount you choose between fully sharp and fully blurred.

This is the most common way photographers have to take creative control over how they capture an image. Generally there is no right or wrong but your choice.

St Marys church will be the main subject for this workshop moving a short distance around and outside the church.

Common Information for all workshops can be found at the bottom of this page.

Auto & Preset Modes

Sunday, August 17th & Saturday, 23rd August

Suitable for digital cameras and phone cameras that have automatic and pre-set modes (ie Portrait, Landscape). These preset modes set the camera up to the best combination of settings for taking photographs of different subjects.

We shall look at what the difference is between the Auto and Programmed Auto modes.

Preset, Auto and Programmed Auto modes are great for beginners, as they help you to learn to take control of your camera.

Common information for all workshops can be found at the bottom of this page.

Manual Mode

Tuesday, 19th August & Monday, August 25th

Suitable for digital and phone cameras that have a manual mode and allow you control the settings for Aperture/Aperture value; Shutter speed/Time interval; and ISO.

This workshop is best suited for those who have used the preset modes for a while and know how to adjust the value of the Aperture and Shutter Speed settings.

The Manual Mode allows you to take full creative control of your camera and adjust two key settings of aperture and shutter speed, independently.

Common Information
For All Workshops

Timings
09:00 to 9:55 - Meet Up
I will be at Cafe 78 testing the tea (and perhaps a bacon roll!).
Feel free to join me and ask your questions.

09:55 to 10:00 - Be ready to start
Please be ready to start your workshop on time at 10:00 as the first thing covered is the Health & Safety brief. If people arrive late, the Safety brief will have to be given again. This wastes workshop time and is not fair on the people who made sure they were ready to start on time.

10:00 to 13:00 - Workshops
Depending on fast we move during the workshop, we may finish slightly later than 13:00.

13:00 to 14:00 - Workshop Q&A .
This is not compulsory but I will be available to answer any questions about the workshop or photography in general.

14:00 to 16:00 - Meet & Ask Session.
I will be at Cafe 78 for a further 2 hours to answer questions about the artwork on display.

Location
The workshops start and finish at Cafe 78 at the top end of the High Street, Andover.

Facilities
At all times during the workshop, we shall be no more than 5 minutes walk from all the normal facilities located in town.

Equipment
You just need your camera or mobile phone fully charged, with the memory storage having enough space for at least 300 photographs.
If you have more than one lens, please choose your general purpose lens.
If you have lots of camera kit, just bring the basic camera and lens.

Although we will always be close to facilities in town, please bring a bottle of water for your workshop, a full bottle not half drunk.
I always carry a second bottle that is only used in emergencies.

Clothing suitable for the weather excepted on the day. Which lately it seems it could be anything!

You may wish to bring some money as we will be starting and ending at Cafe 78, who take both cash and card payments.

Access
All workshops are access friendly but you may be asked to take a very slight, short alternative route in places, to bypass a step. You will not miss out on viewing all the features we shall be visiting.
Carers and guardians may attend for free, if they are not using their camera/phone camera, when they will be charged half the fee.

Under 16 Year Olds
Those under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or a guardian who is aged over 18 years of age.
Guardians may attend for free, if they are not using their camera/phone camera, when they will be charged half the fee.

Wellness
I would ask that for the duration of your workshop you turn your mobile phone 'OFF'. If you are using your mobile phone camera for the workshop, please turn off all notifications; alarms; phone calls etc; with the volume set to off.

Besides being a distraction, others members on the workshop may wish to escape from technology. Switch off the outside world and immerse yourself in your photography and get the most from your workshop and let others do the same please .... it is only for a couple of hours.

If you are unsure how to disable certain settings, phone instruction manuals are normally free to view/download with a quick web search.

Follow Up Sessions
Saturday, August 30th & Sunday 31st - Timings tbc.
You will be offered a chance to join a free Follow Up Session to ask any questions you have about your workshop or your photography.
The timings will be confirmed on your workshop.

Fee
The fee for each workshop has been reduced for Hampshire Open Studios from £37 to £19.
For carers and guardians there is no fee unless they are using their camera or phone camera when the fee will be £9.50.

Fee's are to be paid by bank transfer and cleared prior to your workshop taking place.
Cash can be accepted on the morning of your workshop, if you have previously booked your place and have received confirmation of your booking.
Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of your workshop to allow payment time.
